50th build: Affordable homeownership

Habitat for Humanity Red Deer hosts information sessions for upcoming build in Evergreen

Mar 21, 2023 | 2:03 PM

Habitat for Humanity Red Deer is inviting central Alberta families interested in affordable homeownership to attend one of their three upcoming information sessions for their 50th home build in the region.

Habitat Red Deer will be hosting two Zoom sessions from 6 – 7 p.m. on March 30 and April 11. An in-person session on April 3 will be held from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Crossroads Church (38105 Range Rd 275).

Officials say the sessions are aimed to provide information about Habitat’s affordable homeownership program and to answer questions on eligibility criteria, how to apply, and the family selection process.

With a projected ground-breaking date of June 2023, Habitat Red Deer is scheduled to begin construction on four units, or two duplexes, in the Red Deer neighbourhood of Evergreen. These units are to be three-bedroom, two-bathroom homes with an attached garage and unfinished basement. Once completed, Red Deer Evergreen will mark Habitat Red Deer’s 50th home built in central Alberta since 1994, making it a milestone legacy build for the local charity.

“As we complete our current build in Blackfalds, we look forward with anticipation to starting our next build in Red Deer. This will be the first Habitat build in Red Deer since 2018 and we are already receiving inquiries from donors and volunteers about how they can become involved, “ said Karen Vavrek, Chief Executive Officer. “Habitat Red Deer continues to play a critical role in increasing the supply of affordable housing in central Alberta communities. Partnerships between the non-profit community, all levels of government and the private sector are absolutely critical in helping to address the affordable housing crisis we all face.”

As a beginning step, Habitat Red Deer is encouraging individuals to complete the Eligibility Quiz found on their website.

Those who wish to attend any of the information sessions are being asked to register by e-mail with Aspen Boone-Windrim, Family Services Manager at aspen.boonewindrim@habitatreddeer.ca. Attendance at an information session is mandatory prior to applying to the program.

Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Region is a registered charitable organization dedicated to helping central Alberta families build better lives through affordable homeownership. The charity builds homes in partnership with qualifying low-income, working families through a no-down-payment, interest-free mortgage program with the help of donors and volunteers.
