Red Deerians may see two mixed martial arts events this year

Red Deerians may see two mixed martial arts events come to Westerner Park this year.

City council provided no objection at Monday’s meeting for the Central Alberta Combative Sports Commission’s (CCSC) oversight of the Havoc Fighting Championship events, dated for April 21 and November 17.

Alberta is the only Canadian province without a single regulator, requiring municipal governments to oversee fights within their own jurisdiction. The City of Red Deer does not have its own Combative Sports Commission and so any promoter wishing to host an event in the city must notify council and have an approved Commission oversee the event.

The City received a request by the Central Alberta Combative Sports Commission on January 27, 2023. The CCSC, established in the Town of Penhold, said they are currently in discussion with the Westerner to host the events.
