Red Deer Polytechnic Athletes of the Week

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Athletics has announced the Mr. Mikes RDP Athletes of the Week:

1. Peighton Melton

Hometown: Lacombe, Alberta – Open Studies (1st year)

After dropping a double-double, which included 20 rebounds off the bench, on Saturday night against the SAIT Trojans, forward Peighton Melton is named this week’s Queens Athlete of the Week. Melton is the only rookie on this year’s Queens team and RDP athletics says she has been a vital piece to the puzzle, specifically as of late with the team riding a seven-game winning streak. They say the Lacombe native is not someone who blows the team away with her scoring ability but rather with her defensive abilities.

They add she may not get noticed by opposing teams because of that but she has been making a difference on the court which has caught the eye of Head Coach Avery Harrison, who has had nothing but good things to say about Melton lately. At the beginning of the season, Harrison mentioned the five-foot-10 forward in his season preview interview.

“She comes in with some really good coaching throughout high school from Queens Assistant Coach Nadine Cunningham. She was set up for success right there. I have seen her grow. Last May, we started weekly practices and she was in the gym all the time,” she said.

Melton averages about 7.4 rebounds per game and over half of her total rebounds are defensive. RDP officials say she will be a player to watch as the Queens hope to continue their winning ways this week and the rest of the season as they prepare for championships in a few weeks.

“Congratulations Peighton and keep picking up those boards,” said RDP Athletics in a release.

2. Nolan Doell

Hometown: Martensville, SK – Bachelor of Education (1st year)

It is quite the weekend for the rookies as Nolan Doell is named the Kings Athlete of the Week. This is Doell’s first year in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and RDP Athletics says he has been producing lately as he is riding a four-game point streak. He was able to score on the powerplay, even strength and shorthanded. It was a fast start to his weekend as he opened the scoring 23 seconds into the game against the Portage College Voyageurs. With under two minutes to play in the first period, he scored a shorthanded goal. To complete the hat trick, he scored with five minutes left to play in the second period. He would cap off his weekend with an assist on Saturday afternoon. In his four-game point streak, he has four goals and three assists to give him a total of 17 points on the season so far. With his hat trick on Friday, he has now cracked the top five in goals in the ACAC with eight on the year.

Head Coach Trevor Keeper had nothing but good things to say about Doell after his performance on Friday.

“He is a fiery guy and very quick. We started him and he played with some emotion right off the start. He was buzzing the whole game because he was just prepared to play,” he said.

“Congratulations Nolan and good luck this weekend in Saskatchewan,” said RDP officials in a release.
