No injuries reported in basement fire on Erickson Drive

A portion of Erickson Drive was temporarily closed Tuesday afternoon due to a house fire.

Platoon Chief Gordon Klootwyk with the City of Red Deer’s Emergency Services said crews were called at around 2 p.m. to a structure fire at 105 Erickson Drive, closing the street between Ross St. and Eastman Crescent.

Upon arrival, Klootwyk said “there was no smoke showing but the homeowner met us. He had some smoke inhalation.”

Klootwyk said the man, the sole person in the home at the time, was assessed by paramedics but declined to go to the hospital.

He said crews then saw smoke coming from the basement, where the fire is believed to have begun, and were able to fully extinguish the fire.

He noted three fire engines, one ladder truck and one medic arrived to the scene. There were no injuries reported and no damage to neighboring properties.

Pankit Patel, Fire Safety Codes Officer for the City, said the cause of the fire is still under investigation and crews are heading back to the house today.

He says the fire was contained in the basement and did not reach the remainder of the house. Although some parts of the basement were not burned, he said there is significant damage. There is no damage estimate yet, however.

Patel stated it took about one hour to fully extinguish the fire and the final truck left around 5:45 p.m.
