RDP Athletics weekend recap: Jan. 13-15

Jan 16, 2023 | 11:23 AM

Not only did Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Athletics have a successful weekend as the teams combined went 9-3, but the department also held an honorary event for the Queens soccer team on Friday night.

Inside the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, the department hosted the Queens Soccer team to recognize and honour their historic year that saw them win an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championship for the first time in program history. Their banner is now in the rafters inside the gymnasium along with the rest of the banners won from past RDP teams.

Over the weekend, both basketball teams swept the Briercrest College Clippers to become .500 on the season. Queens Hockey showed their dominance with their win on Friday and then exploded for six goals on Saturday night in Calgary against the SAIT Trojans. Kings Volleyball are now riding a nine-match winning streak after only dropping one set this past weekend.

On the other hand, Queens Volleyball had a tough weekend as they dropped both matches to start the 2023 year with one of those teams ranked number three in the country. Lastly, the Kings Hockey team split the weekend with the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings with each team winning away from their home arena.

Basketball

Briercrest College Clippers (5-7) at Queens (6-6)

  • Friday, January 13 at 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, January 14 at 1 p.m.

Officials say it was quite an impressive start to the year for Queens Basketball as they pulled out the brooms and swept away the Briercrest College Clippers in a two-game series at home. They say what is most impressive is that they now sit with a 6-6 record in a very tight South Division.

For most of the two games, the Queens had their shooting shoes on, specifically guard Sophie Melin (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) who scored 46 points in the two games with over half of those points coming off a three-point shot as she finished 50 per cent from beyond the arc. Melin was named the player of the game on Saturday with guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal (Educational Assistant) being honoured with the award on Friday night.

Briercrest College Clippers (1-11) at Kings (6-6)

  • Friday, January 13 at 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, January 14 at 3 p.m.

With the Queens two victories and the Kings two victories, they were able to pull out a four-game sweep of the Briercrest College Clippers. The Kings’ offence exploded to 104 points compared to the 73 the Clippers put up on Friday night, and they would follow that up with a closer game but still a win with a 62-68 final score. The player of the game went to Cole Wicker (Bachelor of Education) on Friday night with 23 points. On Saturday night, Eduardo Crespo (Academic Upgrading) was awarded the honour with 15 points, seven rebounds.

Hockey

SAIT Trojans (2-7) vs Queens (7-2)

  • Friday, January 13 at 7 p.m. at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre
  • Saturday, January 14 at 7:45 p.m. in Calgary

The Queens Hockey team joined forces with their fellow basketball teams as they were another RDP squad that were able to sweep their opponent this past weekend. It started with a hard-fought game on Friday night in Red Deer that saw the Queens win 3-1. Julie Wagner (Bachelor of Science) scored in the first, Natalie Buttle (Bachelor of Kinesiology) added one in the second, and Avery Lajeunnesse (Bachelor of Education) picked up the insurance marker. Buttle was awarded the player of the game as she scored the winning goal.

On Saturday night, the Queens exploded with six goals enroute to a shutout win for goaltender Izzy Palumbo (Bachelor of Commerce). But it did take them a while to get there as the game was delayed for almost an hour due to a referee mix-up. In the end, they were able to pull the game off with just one flooding in between the second and third period.

They were able to get goals from six different players starting with Jailyn Bablitz (Bachelor of Education) and Lajeunnesse in the first. In the second Buttle and Kassy Gaudette (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) added a tally and in the third, Haley Kicia (Bachelor of Arts in Sociology) and Kaedence Mollin (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) got a goal as well. Buttle received her second player of the game honour in as many games.

University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings (7-6-1) vs Kings (9-4-1)

  • Friday, January 13 at 7 p.m. in Camrose
  • Saturday, January 14 at 7 p.m. at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

It was a different weekend for the Kings Hockey team as they were able to find a way to blow out the Vikings in their own hometown 6-2 on Friday night but would fall apart in Red Deer on Saturday evening with a 5-2 loss after three unanswered goals in the second period in a span of four minutes.

On Friday, Jacob Wozney (Bachelor of Education) tied it up at one but before the period ended the Vikings would take a 2-1 lead into the intermission. However, after this, it was all Kings. They went on to score five unanswered goals with back-to-back goals from defence Parker Gavlas (Business Certificate). Reegan Doig (Open Studies) would add to the scoring fun and in the third, Chance Longjohn (Bachelor of Education) would get a shorthanded goal and to top it all off, Deegan Mofford (Open Studies) added a late one.

Due to some technical difficulties with ACACTV, RDP Atheltics say they were unable to see the player of the game for Friday night’s game.

As for Saturday, the two goals for the Kings came from Hayden Clayton and Dylan Esau. The player of the game went to Chase Haygarth (Business Administration General).

Volleyball

Queens (6-5) vs Concordia University Thunder (3-8)

  • Friday, January 13 at 6 p.m. in Edmonton Queens (6-5) vs The Kings University Eagles (11-0)
  • Saturday, January 14 at 6 p.m. at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

It was a tough weekend for the Queens Volleyball team as they fell in back-to-back games for the second time this season. RDP officials say it was an upset on Friday night in Edmonton when the Thunder pulled away with a five-set victory as they entered the game with just a 2-8 record. However, Head Coach Talbot Walton said with the 3-1 loss on Saturday, he was much happier with his team’s performance, especially considering that the Eagles are undefeated and sit third in the nation. On both nights, middle-blocker Autumn Roos was awarded the player of the game honour. Roos finished her weekend with 21 kills and 12 solo blocks.

Kings (10-1) vs Concordia University Thunder (3-8)

  • Friday, January 13 at 8 p.m. in Edmonton

Kings (10-1) vs The Kings University Eagles (8-3)

  • Saturday, January 14 at 8 p.m. at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings continued to show why they are a force to be reckon with in the ACAC as with two wins this past weekend; they have now won nine straight matches. With two additions to their roster in outside-hitter Noah Carlson (Open Studies) and middle-blocker Spencer Purdie (Open Studies), RDP Athletics say they are now an even more competitive squad then they were in the first semester. They were able to win six of the seven sets this weekend with the only loss coming against the Eagles, who were the top team in the North Division.

Friday’s player of the game went to setter Maddux Greves (Business Administration General), and Saturday’s player of the game went to Noah Carlson. Greves finished with 25 assists and five digs. For Carlson in his first two matches repping the Kings uniform, he had a total of 25 kills with 20 of those coming against the Eagles on Saturday night.
