Mayo whips home winner in late OT for Rebels win over Canes

Jan 14, 2023 | 10:20 PM

The Central Division’s top two teams squared off in southern Alberta Saturday night, with the Red Deer Rebels coming out on the winning end of a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against the Hurricanes.

Coming in, the Rebels (28-8-1-3; 60 points) and Canes (23-15-0-2; 48 points) had split the season series one game apiece; Red Deer won 5-0 on Oct. 7, and Lethbridge won 3-2 on Nov. 18. In both cases, the home team won.

They’ll play again Mar. 8, 24, and 25, the latter two to close out the regular season.

Scoring summary

Goals were hard to come by in this one, not that that meant it was any less exciting, however.

Kalan Lind (12th) broke the ice at 2:13 of the second period, beating Harrison Meneghin for the 1-0 lead.

Then, at 12:03 of the second, Miguel Marques equalized, and it was 1-1 after 40 minutes.

The third was also scoreless much like the first, and the teams headed to overtime.

With just five seconds left in the extra frame, Lind set up Hunter Mayo (14th) in the slot, where he waited an extra moment, then fired home the game-winner… see below.

Carstairs native Rhett Stoesser stopped 31 of 32 shots in the win, improving to 16-4-0-0 on the season, with a 2.25 GAA and .912 SV%.

The Red Deer Rebels, on points alone, are now tops in the Eastern Conference with 62, one ahead of Winnipeg; however, the Ice have played 36 games to Red Deer’s 41.

Red Deer, now 29-8-1-3, are 13 points clear of Lethbridge in the Central Division; the Canes have 49 points, while Calgary is idle at 48 and Swift Current has 41.
