New trial date for man charged in Bashaw loaded gun and ammunition seizure

Dec 9, 2022 | 1:51 PM

A new trial date has been set for a man facing charges after Mounties seized a loaded gun and ammunition near a residence in Bashaw this spring.

Jesse James Lyman Macdonald, 33, of Stettler, is scheduled for trial in Stettler provincial court on April 27, 2023.

It was on March 22, 2022, when Bashaw RCMP, with the help of the Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit and Stettler RCMP, arrested a man described as a repeat offender.

Jesse James Lyman Macdonald, according to Mounties, was wanted on multiple warrants.

Police say Macdonald was located behind a residence on 51 St in Bashaw interacting with a woman and a vehicle. As officers approached, they allege Macdonald attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly located and arrested.

The woman, identified as Jody Lil Sarasin, of no fixed address, was arrested for obstruction. Additionally, she was charged with two counts of careless use of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a prohibited firearm, fail to comply with a release order, and possession of a controlled substance (cocaine).

Sarasin, however, had all six counts against her withdrawn on Sept. 8, 2022, in advance of a Sept. 13, 2022 trial date previously scheduled for both her and MacDonald.

Incidental to arrest, RCMP conducted a search of a bag and a vehicle. As a result of the search, RCMP found a loaded hand gun and over 50 rounds of ammunition.

Macdonald was charged with two counts of careless use of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a prohibited firearm, and resist arrest.
