Alberta RCMP lay many impaired driving charges on national awareness day

Red Deer RCMP laid multiple impaired driving charges this past weekend.

Dec. 3 was National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day, with RCMP out across the province at high-visibility checkstops to identify and remove impaired drivers from local streets.

A total of 381 breath samples were taken in Red Deer, and 10 motorists were removed from behind the wheel.

Four license suspensions were issued for drivers who had a blood alcohol concentration equal to or exceeding 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, or failing or refusing to provide a sample.

“These check stops are an important tool in removing dangerous drivers off our roadways,” said Sgt. Michael Zufferli of Red Deer RCMP Traffic Unit. “This holiday season, we want to make sure everyone has a happy holiday by getting home safe.”

“Red Deer RCMP also encourages the public to report suspected impaired drivers. If you see someone driving dangerously, call 911.”

Across Alberta, 77 drivers were removed, with 44 of them over the legal limit or refusing/failing to provide a sample.

Fifteen received a warning, 16 were marked as novice, and two were given 24-hour suspensions due to drug impairment or fatigue.
