Flu shot clinical trial spaces available in Red Deer

A clinical study for a new type of flu shot is accessible in Red Deer right now.

The global trial of the new mRNA vaccine is for those 65 and older, and there are limited spaces. It’s estimated spots globally will be used up in the next week or so, thus registration is recommended at one’s earliest opportunity.

About 25 have signed up locally so far.

Central Albertans can register to take part at CARe Clinic, located at Unit 169, 6900 Taylor Drive.

Known as The GLOW trial, the vaccine is a product of Moderna.

A spokesperson for CARe acknowledges there is vaccine fatigue after so much talk about them the last few years.

“Regardless of what one may think about vaccines, and they’re not for everybody, it comes down to being a way to advance medicine. Clinical trials done the right way, we know at the end of the day are how we get good medicine and treatments,” they say.

“It’s people with an altruistic demeanor who help advance medicine; people willing to devote time and effort to help make good medicine.”

Users also have to fill out a diary. The 12-month trial offers monetary compensation for time spent going to the clinic for the initial shot, plus monthly phone check-ins.

Participants must not have received a flu shot in the last six months.
