Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics weekend recap

Basketball

Medicine Hat College Rattlers (0-2) at Queens (0-2) Friday, October 28 | 6 pm

The Queens basketball team would pick up their first win of the season with a dominant 72-34 performance over the Rattlers. Amy Szymanek led her team in points with 19 points and finished off the game with 19 rebounds. But it was the effort from Sadie Jefferies that would crown her the Queens player of the game.

Saturday, October 29 | 1 pm

The Queens would sweep the Rattlers with another offensive performance in a 90-39 victory. They would finish off the weekend with a 2-2 record. Guard Amy Szymanek was awarded her third player of the game honour in four matches with 21 points and seven rebounds.

Medicine Hat College Rattlers (1-1) at Kings (0-2) Friday, October 28 | 8 pm

It was a nail biter at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre for the Kings basketball team on Friday night. They went to overtime with the Rattlers and came just short, losing 90-87. Post Jose Mauro was named the player of the game for the Kings.

Saturday, October 29 | 3 pm

The Kings would continue their struggles with a fourth straight loss, losing to the Rattlers 85-83. It was another tight matchup between these two, but the Kings just could not close the game. Brett Hochhhausen was named the player of the game with eight rebounds and 13 points

Hockey

Queens (1-0) vs SAIT Trojans (1-1) Friday, October 28 | 7 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In the Queens home opener, they would show off why they were last year’s ACAC Champions. They were up 2-0 in the third period, but the SAIT Trojans battled back to tie it. But the adversity and the composure of Red Deer was relevant as they were able to put home the game-winning goal in the last couple minutes. Forward Jailyn Bablitz was crowned the player of the game for the home team.

Kings (3-1) at Portage College (0-4) Friday, October 28 | 8 pm

The Kings would travel off for a two-game series with the Voyageurs in Lac la Biche. They would win the first game 5-3 in comeback fashion. Forward Dylan Esau was named the player of the game for his team with an assist in the game.

Saturday, October 29 | 1 pm

The Kings would leave Lac la Biche on Saturday afternoon with a loss against the Voyageurs. The Kings were up 2-0 but the home team stormed back with two goals in regulation and then a goal in overtime to take the game 3-2. Jacob Wozney and Jacob Kendall would score the goals for the Kings, but it was Erik Miller that was awarded the player of the match with his outstanding effort throughout the game.

Volleyball

Queens (1-1) at Medicine Hat College Rattlers (1-3) Friday, October 28 | 6 pm

Coming off a bye week, the Queens volleyball team was faced with yet another road match. They would take the first of two matches this past weekend, 3-1. Outside-hitter Jaiden Ferguson was named the player of the game for Red Deer. She finished the match with 16 kills.

Saturday, October 29 | 1 pm

The Queens would travel back from Medicine Hat on a winning note with a 3-1 victory over the Rattlers. Outside-hitter Lauren Junck was named the player of the game for the Queens as she was hitting and serving the ball well with that aggressive top spin serve.

Kings (1-1) at Medicine Hat College Rattlers (1-3) Friday, October 28 | 8 pm

The Kings would also come off a bye weekend and play another match on the road against the Rattlers. They would come away with a 3-1 victory. Right-side hitter Brett Lower would be honoured with the player of the game for his team with 14 kills and six service aces.

Saturday, October 29 | 3 pm

The Kings also came home with a victory but were forced to play five sets in the 3-2 victory over the Rattlers. The Kings were looking strong as they won the first two sets but the Rattlers stormed back to take the next two to force a fifth set. Red Deer would take the last set 15-13. Middle Evan Ockerman won the player of the game award with three kills, three digs and two solo blocks.

Soccer

(ACAC Championship Weekend) Queens vs Lethbridge College Kodiaks Saturday, October 29 | 10:00 am at Comet Stadium (Raymond)

The Queens would face off with the Kodiaks in their first championship soccer match of the season. They would go up 2-0 but the Kodiaks stormed back and cut into their lead. The host team was threatening to tie it, but Red Deer came away with the 2-1 victory sending them into the finals. The goals were scored by Alisha Coules and Sein Furuyama.

Queens vs Concordia University Thunder Sunday, October 30 | 3:00 pm at Comet Stadium (Raymond)

Kings vs Keyano College Huskies Friday, October 28 | 10:00 am at Comet Stadium (Raymond)

It was a nail biting first match to the ACAC Men’s Soccer Championships with a 2-1 final for the Huskies over the Kings. The Kings would concede two straight goals in the second half within six minutes of each other. They would cut into the lead with a goal from Grant Johnson assisted by Eduardo Crespo and Arshdeep Singh. The player of the match went to Ashton Chipman. This would end the Kings 2022-2023 campaign.

Kings and Queens Cross Country

(ACAC Championships) Saturday, October 29 at Concordia University (Edmonton)

The Kings and Queens Cross-Country team had a very successful weekend in Edmonton. They will be off to Nationals in Medicine Hat in a couple weeks.

Jenica Swartz from Queens Soccer ran to a bronze medal finish and Daniel Szucs from the men side was able to secure a fifth-place finish.

The Kings team finished second overall and the Queens placed third in the team category.
