Snowy Roads On The Way

Alberta RCMP remind motorists to be prepared for winter driving

Nov 1, 2022 | 2:18 PM

With winter approaching, Ponoka RCMP Traffic Services would like to take the time to remind the users of Alberta’s Highways, to prepare for upcoming winter driving.

As the temperatures drop and weather deteriorates, Mounties say poor road conditions are all but certain.

RCMP say there are several ways to prepare for the season and now is the time to do so. Mounties encourage motorists to check your vehicles tire condition and ensure that you have appropriate all season or winter tires rated for travelling in snow, ice and slush.

Also, ensure your spare tire is in good condition and that your vehicle has up to date maintenance to prevent unwanted break downs on our roads. Furthermore, police say to please ensure you have filled your windshield washer fluid reservoir with winter rated fluid to ensure your visibility is the best it can be during storms.

Also, ensure that no matter the conditions, you take care to clean your headlights and tail lamps during the journey, say RCMP.

Another good idea is to have a winter travel kit. Mounties say some items to think about packing in your vehicle are: water, blankets, a cell phone charger, a shovel, flashlights, window scrapers / brushes and booster cables. Police note that Alberta often has temperatures dropping well below zero which can cause extreme strain on your battery.

In addition to equipment and safety, RCMP say to always plan your route and let friends or family know your expected time of arrival. If you are not familiar with your route, you’re encouraged to plan ahead of time and have a map accessible.

Other tips include considering locations to stop at overnight, should you encounter road closures or a vehicle breakdown, and always give yourself extra time to arrive at your destination.
