34 years in, Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre providing critical help

Visits from Jan. 1 to Oct. 31, 2021 totaled about 1,500, while there have been 1,800 in the same span this year.

That equates to about 400 clients this year, up from 300 in 2021.

“Another thing we’ve seen an increase in is at our clothing boutique where people can donate children’s clothing for ages 0-2 and maternity wear. We also have diapers and formula available for clients in emergency situations, as well as toiletries and menstrual products.”

Smith says her organization is constantly getting positive feedback.

“Clients tell us we are truly non-judgmental here, and that’s regardless of their past or what they’ve experienced,” she says. “There’s no shame, no guilt, and we don’t tell them what to do. We’re here to listen, understand, and find a way to support them in whatever their journey looks like.”

Smith says they’re always looking for volunteers, including to sit on the board of directors, do reception, help with event committees and more.

Privately funded, Smith shares things are good right now, but help is always appreciated.

There are a couple events on the horizon for the CAPCC.

From Dec. 1-3, the centre’s first annual Christmas musical production will take place at the Memorial Centre. More info is here.

As well, a dessert evening fundraiser is being held Dec. 1 at the Lou Soppit Community Centre in Rocky Mountain House. More details here.

The CAPCC offers many other services, including related to adoption, steps to sexual health, a maternity home program, and male mentors for dads or men who know someone who is pregnant.
