Fun family challenge comes to Red Deer and Sylvan Lake

Oct 5, 2022 | 2:41 PM

Families in Red Deer and Sylvan Lake can bond over a free and fun challenge this November, organized by the Strengthening Positive Assets and Resiliency in Communities (SPARC) non-profit coalition.

For four weeks, the SPARC Family Challenge will be offering simple, free, family- friendly challenges, to complete at home or in their community to help their kids grow up to their fullest potential, the coalition says.

“By participating in the SPARC Family Challenge, you can create strong positive connections with your kids and within your family,” officials said in a release.

The purpose of the challenge is to educate families about the 40 Developmental Assets, which, they state, are research-proven life experiences and building blocks which all children need to grow up healthy, caring, and responsible. The 40 assets fall within the following categories:

  • Support
  • Empowerment
  • Boundaries and Expectations
  • Constructive use of time
  • Commitment to learning
  • Positive values
  • Social Competence
  • Positive identity

According to the Search Institute, the higher number of these assets a young person has, the more likely they are to thrive and to engage in positive behaviours and avoid risky behaviours.

For the SPARC challenge, families will have a choice between two options each week that meet their own family interests and capabilities. Prizes will be available at the end of the four weeks upon completing the post survey.

“Through every day, achievable activities, we can build assets in our kids and help them thrive,” the coalition said in a statement.

The registration deadline is October 26.
