Temporary road closures for 51 Avenue and 51 Street in Ponoka

Sep 23, 2022 | 1:36 PM

Due to road redevelopment work that is currently underway on 51 Avenue in Ponoka, Town officials say additional temporary road closures will start this upcoming Saturday, September 24.

The locations include the intersection of 51 Avenue and 51 Street and along 51 Street, a half a block north and south of the 51 Avenue and 51 Street intersection.

With the limited number of frost-free days left, Town officials say the temporary road closures will allow the road and sidewalk improvements along 51 Avenue to continue in the coming weeks. Detour signs will be posted.

The temporary road closure will remain in place until work at the intersection is completed. Motorists are reminded to please drive with caution near construction zones and to observe road signs and traffic safety personnel.

During the construction on 51 Avenue, pedestrian access to businesses along that street remains open and public parking is available in the following two municipal parking lots which are both in very close proximity and walking distance from 51 Avenue:

• The parking lot on the south side of 51 Avenue with access from the alley at 51 Street.

• The parking lot at the corner of 51 Street and 52 Avenue (across from the Ponoka United Church). On-street parking is also available throughout the rest of downtown Ponoka during construction with the exception of:

• 51 Avenue (between 50 Street and 51 Street); and

• A half block north and south of the 51 Avenue and 51 Street intersection.

Officials say the Town and contractor are continuing to work closely with businesses to coordinate pedestrian access to affected businesses on 51 Avenue throughout the entire project.
