The Red Deer Rebels won their opening game of the 2022-2023 WHL regular season with a 5-2 victory over the Oil Kings at Rogers Place in Edmonton Friday night.

Following an 0-4 record in the pre-season with a home and home series against Calgary and Lethbridge, the Rebels picked up their first win when it mattered most.

The first period put Red Deer at a disadvantage when teammates Talon Brigley and Carter Anderson were sent to the box for roughing and checking from behind, respectively. Edmonton’s John Szabo was also given a penalty for roughing. However, the extra man on the ice brought a goal for last year’s WHL Champions, the Oil Kings, seven seconds before the end of the power play. Cole Miller scored his first of the season at 15:11 on Rebels goaltender Kyle Kelsey. The power play goal was assisted by Dawson Seitz and Ethan MacKenzie, putting the home team up 1-0 .

The tables turned though when Edmonton’s John Szabo was sent to the box again, this time for cross-checking. With just 22 seconds left in the period, Red Deer’s Jhett Larson scored his first of the season, claiming a goal on Oil Kings netminder Kolby Hay. With the help of Tanner Brown and Hunter Mayo on the power play marker, the Rebels tied the game 1-1.

After 20 minutes of play, the Rebels outshot the Oil Kings 17-8.

The Rebels continued capitalizing on power plays in the second period when Edmonton’s Marshall Finnie was given a hooking penalty. Hunter Mayor scored his first of the season at 4:17 with assists from Tanner Brown and Jhett Larson to make it 2-1 Red Deer.

Later in the period, Red Deer’s Carter Anderson scored his first goal of the season at 16:40, to make it 3-1 Rebels. Talon Brigley and Tanner Brown assisted on the goal.

Then, just 25 seconds later, Red Deer’s Hunter Mayor scored his second goal of the night and second of the season at 17:01 to put the Rebels up 4-1. Ollie Josephson and Talon Brigley were credited with the assists.

While the scoreboard was 4-1 in favour of the Rebels, shots on goal favoured the Oil Kings, 11-10, for a two-period total of 27-19 for Red Deer.

In the third, the Oil Kings struck next as Mason Finley scored his first goal of the season at 3:59. Assists were made by Carson Golder and Rhett Melnyk to make the score 4-2 Rebels.

At 18:36, Edmonton pulled goalie Kolby Hay from the net, however, Red Deer’s Jhett Larson capitalized on the opportunity, scoring his second goal of the night and of the season, unassisted at 19:45,to make it a 5-2 final for Red Deer.

The final period saw the Oil Kings with more shots on goal compared to the Rebels, 11-9, but it was still Red Deer who outshot Edmonton overall, 36-30.

Red Deer went 2/4 on power play Friday night, while Edmonton went 1/4 with the man advantage.

While surprisingly no third star was given this game, Edmonton’s Cole Miller received the second star, scoring the first goal of the night. The Rebels’ Hunter Mayo, meanwhile, received the first star for his two goals and one assist on the evening.

The Rebels will play the Oil Kings again Saturday night on home ice at the Peavey Mart Centrium. Puck drop is 7 p.m. with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND Radio.
