The Terry Fox Run returns to an in-person format this weekend in Red Deer.

Taking place on Sunday, the run raised several thousand dollars the last two years using a virtual format.

It’s raised more than $540,000 locally since the Marathon of Hope in 1980.

Lori Hutchings, co-organizer, says it’s very meaningful to continue being part of keeping Terry’s legacy alive.

“Everyone knows a family, a friend or co-worker who has struggled with a cancer diagnosis, many of whom have passed and many who’ve survived,” she says.

“Terry Fox was very selfless. The Marathon of Hope was meant to increase awareness for cancer research, and the Terry Fox Foundation was developed over the years with his family’s involvement to keep that going.

Hutchings notes that 79 cents from every dollar donated goes to cancer research, which is high, she says, for causes such as this one. Its also run by volunteers, she says.

The run starts at 12 p.m. on Sunday the 18th at Gateway Christian School with 1, 5 and 10 kilometre loops along the south bank of the Red Deer River.

Registration is available online or onsite the day of the event, starting at 11.

Snacks and drinks will be provided, and there is no minimum pledge.

There are about 50 people registered, but past runs have had 200 on the low end, so many more are expected day of.

Schools throughout central Canada are doing separate Terry Fox Run events throughout September, the month in which Terry was forced to stop his run due to the spread of cancer to his lungs.
