Positivity abound as CentreFest and Meet the Street begin

The weather is hot, but it couldn’t get much better for this year’s combined CentreFest and Meet the Street events in downtown Red Deer.

While the second round of Meet the Street murals are permanent, CentreFest activities are going on Saturday until 8 p.m., and then restart Sunday from 1-6.

There’s stilt-walking, hula hoop artistry, magic and a whole lot more going on along Ross Street, in City Hall Park and in the parking lot adjacent the Welikoklad Event Centre.

Chelsea Bates, CentreFest chairperson, says it was disappointing to not have the event the last couple years, but the atmosphere this weekend is exciting.

“I love that we can partner with Meet the Street and celebrate visual art with performance art together. In combination, it’s just stunning,” says Bates.

“To get people to come down and see the murals, it’s really uplifting. Plus, people really enjoy the patio. The feeling downtown overall is really positive.”

Bates reminds that the performers aren’t paid by anyone but appreciative onlookers, so do bring a little cash (if possible) when coming down to watch.

The events are also part of month-long Alberta Culture Days activities.
