Tools for School

It’s been a really good summer for those behind a local program that gets school supplies and backpacks to kids about to hit the books once again.

Tools for School, operated by The Outreach Centre, has given out 684 backpacks full of supplies, as of the morning of Aug. 30.

That said, there’s a particular need for supplies and bags for grade 9-12 students.

Ian Wheeliker, Outreach Centre executive director, says they’re prepared to keep taking donations of both supplies and money for another few weeks.

“There are always families moving into the area, or transferring to another school, plus with the Ukraine situation, we’ll need to have bags and supplies for them,” says Wheeliker.

“I want to thank the community. The donations of supplies and money are coming in and it’s been amazing. But we still have a ways to go, and need things like coloured pencils, crayons, looseleaf, binders, geometry sets, and backpacks, particularly for grade 9-12 students.”

Last year, the campaign hit 900 backpacks given out, but they’re on pace for at least 1,000 this time around, believes Wheeliker.

“Monetary donations are just as good because when we’re short on a particular thing, we can just go buy more,” he adds.

“All the kids come in and leave with smile on their face because they’ve got what they need, and they’re pretty pumped about returning to school.”

To donate, bring items or cash donations to The Outreach Centre (4101 54 Avenue, Red Deer), and if you’re in need, call The Outreach Centre at 403-347-2480.
