Two Wolf Creek courses named to ScoreGolf’s Top 100

A central Alberta golf resort has once again been named (twice) to ScoreGolf’s list of top 100 courses in Canada.

Wolf Creek’s Links and Old courses, come in at #52 and #67, respectively

Both courses, which are near Ponoka, have ranked on ScoreGolf’s list for many years.

Aaron Miller, head pro at Wolf Creek, says the recognition evokes a lot of pride, adding that they owe it to all the players who come out.

“That’s what pushes up the rankings and gets us noticed nationally, so it’s a credit to them for enjoying the course so much, says Miller, who estimates about 40,000 rounds are played annually between the two courses.

“What sets them apart from others, I think, is that they are both Rod Whitman designs. The Old course was his first solo design, and he learned under known architects such as Pete Dye and Bill Coore. He’s one of the best on the planet now.”

Whitman, who’s a Ponoka native himself, has four other courses on the list, including Cabot Links in Inverness, Nova Scotia at #5, Sagebrush in Merritt, B.C. at #13, Blackhawk in Nisku, Alberta at #15, and The Algonquin in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, New Brunswick at #60.

“Our courses are a little more rugged than your standard tree-lined country club, traditional parkland-type course,” says Miller. “Whitman uses the land so well; he takes what’s given to him and does it all very naturally, is so creative and makes the most fun and playable holes you can find.”

The Old course at Wolf Creek was designed in 1984, while the Links course opened its front nine in 1996 and the back nine in 2010.
