Ponoka RCMP have laid firearms charges against a man following an incident on Friday, July 29.

At around 9 p.m. that day, Ponoka members were dispatched to a report of a male suspect who had allegedly assaulted another male at the Calnash Ag Centre.

This had reportedly occurred after the suspect was observed operating a vehicle erratically in the event centre parking lot.

The suspect was said to have gotten out of the vehicle, only to return 10 minutes later where he then allegedly shot two rounds into the air with a firearm from his vehicle.

Police say the suspect departed once again driving on Highway 2A and proceeded to fire three more rounds in the air from his vehicle while driving.

Ponoka RCMP, along with Wetaskiwin Police Dog Services, located and arrested the suspect near the Aquaplex.

A search of the suspect’s vehicle subsequent to his arrest located a 12-gauge shotgun which was seized by police. The vehicle being driven by the suspect was seized and towed.

The suspect has been charged with the following:

· Careless Use of a Firearm

· Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm/Prohibited Weapon

He also received an Immediate Roadside Sanctions for Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle. The accused will be appearing in Ponoka provincial court on Sept. 9.
