Jul 9, 2022 | 10:54 AM

The Town of Sylvan Lake is kicking off construction of its Festival Street (50A Street) expansion project.

Work is to begin July 11, with completion scheduled for this October. Construction will take place between 7 a.m and 7 p.m., mostly Monday to Saturday, and occasionally on Sunday.

When finished, Festival Street will extend to 50A Avenue.

This phase of the project includes:

  • Excavation and removals
  • ATCO gas line work
  • Water main replacement
  • Sanitary service replacements
  • Installation of electrical conduit and streetlights
  • Gravel road structure
  • Asphalt paving
  • Concrete sidewalks and crosswalks
  • Landscaping
  • Line marking
  • Installation of a public art component

The next phase begins in 2023:

  • Second layer of asphalt
  • Addition of street furniture

Funded by a federal investment of over $556,000, dollars are coming from the Canada Community Revitalization Fund, which is administered in Alberta by Prairies Economic Development Canada.

The Town believes the project will help in:

  • Directing event traffic to flow onto 50 Street past shops and restaurants.
  • Creating and sustaining jobs.
  • Increasing parking capacity. Events held in parking lots reduced parking spaces.
  • Increasing paid parking revenue.
  • Encouraging joint effort with downtown businesses during events.
  • Expanding to accommodate larger events.
  • Beautifying the area to encourage investment.
