Update on proposed new dog park and skateboard park expansion in Ponoka

Jun 24, 2022 | 12:26 PM

The Town of Ponoka has completed the first round of public consultation on conceptual plans for a proposed new dog park and skateboard park expansion.

The Town says it would like to thank citizens who have provided input to date. Officials say the feedback will be used to create more detailed conceptual designs for both parks which will be brought back for a second round of public review and input later this summer.

“During the second round of public consultation the Town will be reaching out to the community and inviting citizens to provide additional input,” said Sandra Lund, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Ponoka.

The new updated conceptual designs will also be posted on the Town website once they have been created and are ready for public review and input. More details about when the second round of consultation will begin will be announced in the coming weeks.

Construction of both parks will depend on future consideration and approval of the park designs, location and budget by town council. Town officials say both projects align with council’s strategic priorities of enhancing the quality of life for Ponoka citizens through improvements to recreational amenities.

Planning and design development of the proposed new dog park and expanded skateboard park are also based on recommendations in the Town of Ponoka’s Downtown Action Plan and Recreation Master Plan.

The proposed location for the new dog park is on the east side of 49 Street on recently acquired land across from the Town of Ponoka Publics Works yard. The current conceptual plans for the new dog park include a new parking lot and trail extension that would connect with the north trailhead of the Battle River Valley trail system at the green bridge.

The current conceptual plans could see the existing Hamilton Skate Park extended south to include the space currently occupied by the former Town of Ponoka recycling yard. The sidewalk in front of the Hamilton Skate Park would also be extended south to connect with the pedestrian bridge that crosses over the Battle River and connects with the river valley trail system.
