Alberta RCMP recognizes National Indigenous Peoples Day 2022
On June 21, 2022, Alberta RCMP recognized National Indigenous Peoples Day with a Tipi Raising ceremony in front of the headquarters building.
Corresponding with the summer solstice, National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrates the unique heritage, diverse cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Mounties acknowledge the date of June 21 is a significant time where many Indigenous Peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near to this day for generations.
In many communities, police say this day also turns into a weeklong celebration of Indigenous Peoples and culture.
The Tipi in front of headquarters was raised by Nehiyaw/Cree Traditional knowledge keeper Jamie John, Jason Williams and Kimowan Weaslehead Kehewin, who provided Tipi Teaching about the setup.
