Clean Air Day June 8

Inaugural Blue Skies Bicycle Ride this weekend

Jun 8, 2022 | 10:35 AM

June 8, 2022 is Clean Air Day, an annual, international day to recognize how important good air quality is to our health, environment, and the economy.

As a result, officials with Sundre-based Parkland Airshed Management Zone (PAMZ), say the 2022 international Clean Air Day focus is on air quality in a changing climate.

PAMZ officials say some air pollutants, such as car emissions, contribute to climate change, and note that citizens can help to reduce those air pollutants by taking public transit or choosing active transportation, such as biking and walking.

To recognize and celebrate Clean Air Day this year, the PAMZ, in partnership with Kerry Wood Nature Centre, are hosting their first ever Blue Skies Bicycle Ride on Sunday, June 12 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m..

Residents can join in the fun by coming out to decorate your bicycle and showing off your creativity in one of the bicycle parades, which will be happening at 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.. You can decorate your bicycle in advance or at the event with the largely recycled decorations provided.

There will be information booths to check out as well.

“We are excited to be celebrating Clean Air Day with a weekend fun, family friendly, Blue Skies Bicycle Ride event,” says Executive Director, Kevin Warren. “Bicycles are a great, active transportation option that reduce emissions, thus contributing to cleaner air.”

The area it encompasses includes communities within the central Alberta region, running from Three Hills in the east to the BC border in the west and from just north of Crossfield in the south to Ponoka in the north.
