Alberta Open Farm Days this summer

Jun 2, 2022 | 11:32 AM

Alberta Open Farm Days is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2022 and urbanites from across the province are being encouraged to meet and mingle with their rural neighbours this summer.

The province-wide open house, which runs Aug. 13-14, 2022, is an incubator for agri-tourism and rural sustainability.

The event brings Albertans together through educational and experiential agricultural-based initiatives to learn about where your food comes from. As well, some of Alberta’s most talented chefs and rural communities will be hosting a memorable series of farm to table culinary events that will be held around the province using Alberta farm products.

Tim Carson, Chief Executive Officer, Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies, describes the program as an opportunity for consumers to connect directly with producers and find out where their food comes from, the process that takes place, and experience the wonders of agriculture.

“It’s also a great opportunity to get out and actually tour our rural Alberta,” he explains. “It’s a fabulous place and to see all of these wonderful places.”

With the COVID-19 pandemic exposing the delicacy of food security over the past couple of years, Carson says it highlights what an amazing job Alberta does at agriculture.

“We have a tremendously diverse agriculture community,” says Carson. “We do produce some of the best food in the world here, with the consumer and the producer having great ways to connect through shopping local. Driving an economy is a great thing as well. This is a truly blessed province.”

Carson hopes those who attend Alberta Open Farm Days this summer, take away a greater understanding of how much effort and joy Alberta producers take in producing quality food for Alberta and beyond.

“Sustainability and stewardship are top of mind for our producers to ensure their farm produces for generations to come,” he points out. “We also boast quite the variety in our province. Every year, we get great information back from those who are going out, that they experience things they never would have otherwise.”

“There’s something truly valuable to the human spirit about being able to get your hands in the dirt and this is one of those ways that you can do that,” adds Carson.

He says the agri-tourism industry has been growing over the past decade.

“As part of this program, we like to ensure that we’re nurturing and providing some level of support,” shares Carson. “I think the opportunities for the rural economy have some direct benefits to agri-tourism and tourism in general here in our province. The opportunity to bring those people from our urban centres out to visit rural communities has really been exciting.”
