Jr. B Vipers introduce new head coach for 2022-23 HJHL season

The Jr. B Red Deer Vipers have a new bench boss, and his name will be a familiar one from around Red Deer Minor Hockey circles.

Fred Jones, a former Viper himself, hopes to guide the team to a Heritage Junior Hockey League championship this season, alongside new assistants Reo Lajeunesse and Brody Kalinowski.

“I want to create an environment for the boys that’ll make them want to be here every night. I need my players to be committed to the systems that we’re going to put in place,” said Jones at Servus Arena, the Vipers’ home rink, on Wednesday.

“We all have to pull together on the same strings and believe in each other. That’s my philosophy.”

Jones has coached for over a decade at all levels with Red Deer Minor Hockey, following his passion for the game.

“I’ve always thought this would be something down the road that I would want to get into. I know most of these kids too, so I’ve seen them grow up, and we’re looking forward to having a very good run here,” added Jones. “We’re going to give every kid an opportunity to be their best on the ice.”

General Manager Dale Scott touched upon building the team as part of growing the league’s overall attractiveness.

“The last two seasons have been difficult, not just for our organization, but hockey all across Canada and in the HJHL,” said Scott. “We’re trying to do new things to attract fans. For us, it isn’t just about the hockey, it’s about visibility and being involved in the community, plus being more involved with minor hockey. We see the Vipers as almost an extension of Red Deer Minor Hockey.”

Scott shared that the Vipers had interest from more than just Jones, with applications coming in from a junior program in Ontario, and a university in northeastern United States.

Noting that Jones has agreed to coach beyond the 2022-23 season, Scott also thanked Kyle Scott, Canon Whitbread and Al Brown for their contributions as coaching staff over the last two “tough” years.

The Vipers bowed out last season in the third round against Cochrane, going 25-8-3 in the regular season for a second place finish in the Northern Division.
