Alberta nurses launch province’s first profession-inclusive association

May 9, 2022 | 4:47 PM

A group of Alberta nurses have been working together over the last 15 months in order to launch The Alberta Association of Nurses (AAN).

The AAN is the first profession-inclusive association for nurses in Alberta, whose mandate is to enhance, promote, and advocate on behalf of all nursing professions.

According to a press release, the association is coming at a time when Alberta nurses face serious challenges as they continue to care for Albertans who are hospitalized with COVID-19.

Barb Shellian with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CNRA) says the introduction of this association will benefit all nurses in Alberta.

“This change creates room for us to build a future worth wanting for the nursing profession, while expanding on the experience of the past,” Shellian said.

AAN Executive Director Kathy Howe is a registered nurse and has over twenty years of experience. Howe says she’s thrilled to be spearheading the association.

“Our mandate is one I feel incredibly passionate about,” said Howe. “Providing a strong, unified voice for the nursing professions is something all Alberta nurses have long deserved. LPN, NP, RN, RPM, nursing student, or retired nurse – wherever you fit, you belong here.”

On the AAN’s website, albertanursing.ca, potential members can find links to an assortment of member benefits, professional development, and an advocacy and advancement section.

Besides providing a platform for all nurses across the province, the AAN hopes to be able to connect its members to one another as it continues to strengthen the nursing profession in Alberta.
