Contract awarded for Springbank Dam near Calgary

Nine years after a catastrophic flood devastated parts of Calgary and surrounding communities, work is to begin on a dam to protect the area in the future.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says the province has awarded a $744-million contract for the Springbank off-stream reservoir to Vinci Construction.

The project was delayed because several landowners whose – land will be affected by the dam west of Calgary – opposed it.

Transportation Minister Rajan Sawhney says voluntary agreements have = been completed with all landowners, so no land will have to be expropriated.
