Red Deer Rotary Club hosting Cinco de Mayo fundraiser for food bank

Apr 19, 2022 | 2:08 PM

There is an extra twist involved with this year’s usual Cinco de Mayo activities in Red Deer this year, and it’s not just lime.

Rotary Club of Red Deer East is hosting a 3-hour virtual kitchen party with a Mexican theme on Thursday, May 5, to raise funds for the development of the Community Kitchen at the Red Deer Food Bank.

“Taco de Mayo” will be hosted by Meg Tucker of “Cook with Meg” and co-hosted by Brenda Kolosa beginning at 5:30 pm. The menu includes Mexican Mule cocktails, a Sassy Street Corn Dip for an appetizer, and the main course, Chicken Tinga Tacos.

“We are so excited about this really unique event,” says Sharon Moffat, event coordinator. “It’s combining the best of Eastern Canada’s famous kitchen parties with the flavourful cuisine in honour of Cinco de Mayo, all done virtually in the comfort and convenience of your home. It’s going to be a fun evening.”

The event is being hosted over Zoom as the Community Kitchen is still under construction, advises Moffat.

“Meg will host the cooking class in her professional kitchen, and Brenda will be on-site at the Food Bank to give folks a behind-the-scenes look at the kitchen’s development and the Food Bank’s operations. We will also be having door prize draws throughout the evening. We’ve had some generous sponsors come forward with some fun prizes.”

Ticket prices include a partial tax receipt, recipes, grocery lists, door prize ticket entries and bonuses. VIP ticket purchasers can have their groceries purchased for them and even have them delivered if they live in the city of Red Deer.

“Spaces on the Zoom line are limited, and tickets are really starting to move, so we encourage people to make their purchases right away before we sell out.”
