Trial set for man charged in alleged Ponoka assault

A trial date has been set for a man accused in an alleged assault in Ponoka last month.

Jesse James Leckner, 31, of no fixed address, is scheduled for trial in Ponoka provincial court on Sept. 16, 2022.

Leckner is charged with assault while choking, assault with a weapon, and three counts of fail to comply with conditions of release.

On March 12, police received a complaint of an assault which occurred in the early morning hours of March 10 on 46 Street in Ponoka. Mounties say the victim advised police she was choked and threatened with a knife.

Leckner is a familiar face in the court system.

On March 16, 2018, Leckner was arrested after he drove a vehicle into a dollar store in south Red Deer. Several charges related to that incident were withdrawn, but he was found guilty of and sentenced for assault of a peace officer, mischief-property over $5,000, and three counts of fail to stop at scene of accident. For that incident, Leckner’s licence was suspended for multiple years, plus he was given a lifetime firearms ban, and spent several months in jail.

Among others, he was also charged in October 2018, while awaiting decision on the previous matter, for assault of a peace officer, for which he received a four-month jail term.
