The Red Deer Rebels grasped their 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings Saturday during the final minutes of action at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

The victory was Red Deer’s thrid in a row and gives them 88 points, good for third place in the WHL’s Eastern Conference, while Edmonton remains in second place in the Eastern Conference with 95 points.

The first period was filled with excitement as both teams played hard to gain a lead. With the Rebels’ Kalan Lind serving a penalty for too many men on the ice, the Oil Kings seized the opportunity. Dylan Guenther scored his 42nd goal of the season on Rebels goaltender Chase Coward at 8:19. Assists on the power play goal came from Ethan Peters and Josh Williams and put Edmonton up 1-0.

Shortly after, the Rebels tied the game 1-1 at 9:33 when Jackson van de Leest scored his third goal this season on Oil Kings netminder Sebastian Cossa. Frantisek Formanek and Liam Keeler claimed the assists.

Neck and neck, Edmonton scored once more at 12:05 with Jakub Demek earning his 19th goal of the season. Josh Williams and Cole Miller assisted on the play, giving the Oil Kings a 2-1 lead.

But at 14:56, the home team leveled the playing field as Jayden Grubbe scored his 13th goal of the WHL season. Kai Uchacz and Jace Isley assisted to tie the game at 2-2.

After 20 minutes of play, the Oil Kings outshot Red Deer 11-7.

In the second period, Edmonton managed a shorthanded goal at 16:26 despite Ethan Peters in the box for delay of game. Justin Sourdif scored his 22nd goal this season, unassisted, giving Edmonton a 3-2 lead.

The Oil Kings outshot the Rebels 12-6 in the second period for a two-period total of 23-13 in favour of Edmonton after 40 minutes.

Then with Red Deer’s Jayden Grubbe serving a double minor high sticking penalty to start the third period, Kai Uchacz scored a shorthanded goal at 2:58, his 13th of the season to tie it 3-3. Jace Isley and Christoffer Sedoff assisted on the play.

Arshdeep Bains then put the Rebels up for good when he scored unassisted at 12:24, his 37th of the season to make it 4-3.

The Oil Kings predictably pulled their goalie Sebastian Cossa out of the net at 18:48, but they were unable to score, making it a 4-3 final.

The final period saw Edmonton outshoot Red Deer 12-10 for a three-period total of 35-23 in favour of the Oil Kings.

On power plays, Edmonton went 1/7, while Red Deer went 0/5 with the man advantage.

The third star of the evening went to the Rebels’ Jayden Grubbe, while the second star went to Edmonton’s Justin Sourdif. The first star went to Rebels’ goaltender Chase Coward.

The win puts the Rebels’ record at 42-17-2-2, while Edmonton drops to 46-14-2-1.

The Rebels will face the Oil Kings once again Sunday, April 3 at Rogers Place. Puck drop is at 4 p.m. with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND radio.
