Design phase moving forward for potential Innisfail aquatic and recreation centre
The Town of Innisfail is moving onto the design phase for a potential new aquatic and recreation centre, estimated at $20 million .
“It’s aging [the aquatic centre], without question, I believe it’s around 35 years old and there are some operational issues with it,” said Mayor Jean Barclay.
After their January decision to build a completely new facility for the centre, town council approved at their Feb. 28 meeting the use of an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) process for the architectural design phase and allocated an additional $300,000 to the budget.
The previous budget for this stage was $300,000 using a Design Bid Build (DBB) process where architects design the project, leaving the Town to then search for contractors to construct. While this process is deemed quicker and more cost effective, administration said it can be risky as many times contractors cannot fulfill the architect’s vision.
