Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics weekend recap

The Red Deer Polytechnic Indoor Track team had a marvelous performance at Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Running Room Indoor Track Grand Prix #2.

Elsewhere, the RDP Kings Hockey team picked up wins against the SAIT Trojans, while the Kings Basketball squad split their weekend series, as the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team dropped their games, despite some solid efforts.

Games between the Queens Hockey team and Olds College Broncos were postponed.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week:

Indoor Track | Sat., Feb. 19 | Running Room Grand Prix #2 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens finished at the top of the team standings. The Kings and Queens 4 x 200 m and 4 x 400 m relay teams were excellent, placing first.

There were also several great individual performances from the Polytechnic’s student-athletes.

Queens Hockey | Thursday, February 17 | Olds College

This game was postponed.

Queens Hockey | Friday, February 18 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

This contest between the RDP Queens and Olds College Broncos was also postponed.

Kings Hockey | Friday, February 18 | SAIT

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team completed a 3-2 comeback victory in overtime after trailing 2-0 to the SAIT Trojans.

The Kings scored three consecutive power play goals. First-year Jacob Kendall had a pair of tallies, including the game winner. Sylvan Lake’s Hayden Clayton added a single marker.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, February 19 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The third place RDP Kings (8-3-2-1) defeated the fourth seed SAIT Trojans 6-2 at Red Deer Polytechnic.

“The guys played well tonight,” said Trevor Keeper, Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey Head Coach. “We started with a two-nothing lead and stayed ahead for the rest of the game.”

Along with Tucker Scantlebury’s hat trick, Erik Miller, Brennan Davis and Easton Haygarth scored for the Kings. Goaltender Arik Weersink was very solid in net, turning aside 34-of-36 shots.

The Kings have locked up third spot in the standings and home ice advantage in the best-of-three quarter-final. Two regular season games remain.

Queens Basketball | Friday, February 18 | Olds College

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team worked hard, but dropped a 78-59 road decision to the Olds College Broncos.

Queens Player of the Game Amy Szymanek contributed 10 points and eight rebounds over 33 minutes.

Queens Basketball | Saturday, February 19 | St. Mary’s University

The fifth seed RDP Queens (6-8) fell 83-40 to the first place St. Mary’s University Lightning (14-1) in Calgary.

Sylvan Lake’s Sadie Jeffries contributed seven points. Red Deer’s Keanna Richards had six points. The Queens have already qualified for the playoffs, with two regular season games left.

Kings Basketball | Friday, February 18 | Olds College

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team used an explosive second half to down the Broncos 90-85.

Fifth-year guard Tyronn King scored a game high 40 points for the Polytechnic.

Kings Basketball | Saturday, February 19 | St. Mary’s University

The St. Mary’s University Lightning got by the third seed Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (8-6) by a score of 85-78.

Kings Player of the Game Cody White accumulated 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Toronto’s King, a Legal Assistant student, continues to lead the league in scoring (25.7 points per game). The Kings have secured a berth in the postseason.
