The Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG) is encouraging local families to enjoy a fun family day of cattle culture and crafts.

Admission is free and for all ages. The MAG is located at 4525 47A Avenue, Red Deer.

Visitors can choose from a variety of crafts and activities both indoor and out (weather permitting).

For those who like to be hands-on, some activities include making a pool noodle hobby horse (*first 100 people), colouring a public mural, and using twine to make a rope on an old-fashioned rope-maker. A photo-booth will be set up in the “Capitol Theatre”. If you are unable to attend the event, there are hobby horse kits available from the MAG (limited quantities) from now until Saturday, Feb. 19at 4:30 p.m..

The MAG’s current exhibits of local art include the “Ya Ha Tinda – The Ranch”photography exhibit and “Our West Country” plein air painting exhibit which will be open for those who want to explore more of the western theme for Family Day. All of the works on display have been done by central Alberta artists.

There is also going to be short 10-minute tours of Heritage Square next to the MAG every half hour to learn about some of the historic buildings onsite, including Red Deer’s oldest building.

A colouring contest is also taking place. The colouring sheet can be downloaded from the MAG’s website or pick up at the museum. Entries must be returned to the museum no later than Feb. 22, to be entered into the draw to win your choice of an art kit or MAG family membership.

Volunteers from the Central Alberta Photographic Society plus MAG staff will be snapping photos and taking video of the event. Masks are required for everyone over age 12 as per AHS guidelines, though officials encourage all attendees to wear a mask.
