35 Alberta golfers assisted

Five local golfers chosen for 2022 Alberta Golf Athlete Development Program

Five local golfers are among 35 chosen across the province to be supported for Alberta Golf’s 2022 Athlete Development Program.

The program is said to be designed to help golfers throughout the province reach their competitive goals in the sport.

Support is provided to athletes, coaches, and facilities through a tiered program that includes: local camp grants, interprovincial team opportunities as well as funding for high performance athlete development.

From Red Deer, Cole Bergheim, 18, graduated from Hunting Hills High School in 2021. He was named to the U17 Alberta Golf Team Western Canada Summer Games in 2019. At 16 years old, he won the 98th annual Central Alberta Amateur at Red Deer Golf and Country Club.

Also from Red Deer is just 13-year-old Eileen Park. This past summer, the young athlete at 4’9″ tall was already going national at the Canadian Junior Girls Championship at the Leduc Golf and Country Club. Two weeks before that, she won second place at the Alberta U19 Girls Championship.

From Sylvan Lake, the Graf brothers also made the cut for the program.

Carter, 21, is currently attending North Carolina State University and playing for their Wolfpack golf team. Previously ranked as one of the top amateur players in Canada, he also won the Alberta Junior Championship in July 2019.

On the other hand, younger brother Logan, 17, has played in numerous competitions across the province including the Alberta Golf U17 Championship and Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT).

Lastly, from Lacombe is 21-year-old Brady McKinlay. Graduating from Lacombe Composite High School, he finished in second place at the 2019 Canadian Junior Amateur. Having played for York College in Nebraska, he now plays for the Wolverines at Utah Valley University.

All 35 chosen players are ranked as Tier 3 golfers, meaning they are established provincial and emerging national players.

In 2022 the total investment being made by Alberta Golf into Sport Development is $190,000. Of this total, $40,000 is being allocated to the 2022 Athlete Development Program.

Players will receive individual amounts up to $2,000 based on their statistics from the previous year, funds personally invested in their athletic careers, and voluntary time given back towards the golf community.
