It’s time again for the week’s RDP Athletes of the Week.

1. Nicole Homan – Queens Curling
Hometown – Red Deer, Alberta
Bachelor of Education Secondary (1st year)

In her first Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Curling competition, Nicole Homan (second) rose to the challenge and had a fantastic performance at Bonspiel #2 at Red Deer’s Pidherney Centre. Homan consistently made her shots and was a relentless sweeper, helping to lead the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Curling team to an impressive 3-1 record. After four games, the Queens sit tied for first place with the NAIT Ooks and Lakeland College Rustlers in the ACAC Women’s Curling standings.

The Bachelor of Education Secondary student from Red Deer consistently works hard at practice and is an important member of the Red Deer Polytechnic Curling program.

Homan and the Queens will now prepare for the ACAC Curling Championships, which will take place from March 5-6 in Camrose.

2. Maddux Greves – Kings Volleyball
Hometown – Calgary, Alberta
Business Administration General (4th year)

Setter Maddux Greves had a record breaking weekend for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team. In Thursday’s three set victory over the Ambrose University Lions (25-15, 25-11 and 25-15), the talented fourthyear recorded an astounding 14 service aces. This feat eclipsed the previous 20 year old record of 12 aces in one match, held by Curtis Russel of the Keyano College Huskies (2001/2002). Medicine Hat College’s Cory Wlos also had 12 aces in one match back in 1993/1994. In addition to his serving prowess, Greves added 24 assists and three digs and was recognized as the North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game.

The Business Administration General student from Calgary continued his strong play in Lethbridge on Saturday. Greves ran an effective offence and contributed 52 assists, eight digs, six kills and two aces in the Kings’ four set win (25-22, 25-14, 20-25 and 25-18). Once again, he was named the RDP Kings Player of the Game.

Greves will be an important student-athlete for the Kings (12-4) as they compete at the upcoming ACAC Championship in March.

RDP ATHLETICS SCHEDULE – FEB. 17-19, 2022

All visitors to Red Deer Polytechnic’s campuses are expected to follow the health and safety protocols, which include wearing a face covering.

Indoor Track | Sat., Feb. 19 | Running Room Grand Prix #2 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Indoor Track team will host Running Room Grand Prix #2. The Kings and Queens will look to build upon their performances from Running Room Grand Prix #1. At that competition, the RDP Kings finished first and the Queens placed second. Spectators are permitted at this event.

Queens Hockey | Thursday, February 17 | 7 pm | Olds College

The first place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team (8-2-1) will face-off against the third place Broncos in Olds (5-6-0). Forwards Mary Hirsch and Alli Soyko share third spot in league scoring, with 10 points apiece. RDP goaltender Madison Fox has been excellent this season. The Bachelor of Science Nursing student leads ACAC Women’s Hockey with a marvelous 0.80 goals against average and 0.969 save percentage.

Queens Hockey | Friday, February 18 | 7 pm | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Queens will host the Broncos.

Kings Hockey | Friday, February 18 | 7 pm | SAIT

The third seed Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team (6-3-2-1) will battle the fourth place SAIT Trojans (6-5-0-1). Many of the Kings’ first-years have adjusted very well to ACAC competition and their contributions have increased over the past several weeks. Rookie Jacob Kendall leads the Kings with 15 points, which ranks third in the league. While typically a forward, Kendall has also effectively filled in on the team’s blueline.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, February 19 | 7 pm | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In a rematch, the RDP Kings will entertain the Trojans at Red Deer Polytechnic.

Queens Basketball | Friday, February 18 | 6 pm | Olds College

The fifth place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team (6-6) will tip-off against the sixth seed Olds College Broncos (4-9) on the road. The top six teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs. Amy Szymanek has climbed the ACAC Women’s Basketball scoring leader rankings. The Bachelor of Education Middle School student sits fourth in league scoring with 16.3 points per game.

Queens Basketball | Saturday, February 19 | 6 pm | St. Mary’s University

The RDP Queens will challenge the first place St. Mary’s University Lightning (13-1) in Calgary. Kings Basketball | Friday, February 18 | 8 pm | Olds College The third place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team (7-5) will play the seventh seed Broncos (4-9). The Kings have been a solid rebounding team, averaging 40.6 per game. Ty King leads that department for RDP with 7.6 boards per game.

Kings Basketball | Saturday, February 19 | 8 pm | St. Mary’s University

The Kings will compete against the St. Mary’s University Lightning (7-6). Both teams have 14 points in the standings, although Red Deer Polytechnic has a game in hand.
