Anticipated To Open In September 2024

Wolf Creek Public Schools launches survey for public input on new Blackfalds high school

Officials with the Alberta government say a new high school announced for Blackfalds in November 2019 is expected to be complete in September 2024.

The Gr. 9-12 school is anticipated to have a capacity of 950 students when it opens in over two years-time.

According to officials, a new school in the community is great; however, it is anticipated to have some impacts on enrollment for other schools in surrounding communities, such as at Lacombe Composite High School (LCHS), which currently has students who reside in both Blackfalds and Clive.

Officials acknowledge a new school will bring some new changes, but admit they’re excited about the opportunities the new school will provide, including a review of current attendance boundaries and grade configurations of all schools in Blackfalds and Lacombe.

A committee’s review of the project began in fall 2021, and includes Wolf Creek parents, school administrators, trustees, staff and municipal officials.

The committee thus far has looked into reaching out to broader stakeholders, along with seeing how the process will be going forward towards 2024.

Topics such as ride times for students have come up as Blackfalds and Lacombe students will have transportation offered to their chosen locations. For rural students residing in the county (within the Lacombe area) who are transported to Lacombe schools, students that live 2.4 km from their designated school will have a fee charged to them, if bussing is something the student wants to access.

A survey for public input is open from Feb. 1-15, with officials noting they want all Blackfalds and Lacombe and area families, students, staff, and the broader community to have their say in the process.

Officials say options will be in development from February to the end of April 2022. Public feedback on the options will be sought in May 2022.

Following that, the feedback will be reviewed and considered in combination with information such as population and enrolment projections and operational realities, such as transportation costs to help form the development of Attendance Boundary and Grade Configuration options.
