Red Deer’s two Members of Parliament are responding to news today that Erin O’Toole is no longer leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

In a media release, Red Deer-Lacombe’s Blaine Calkins’ calls the decision difficult.

“Leading a federal Party is an extremely daunting task and I want to thank Erin and his family for their efforts over the past year and a half. I am a proud member of the Conservative Caucus and the Conservative team,” says Calkins, who was first elected in 2006, seeing four leaders leave the position of leader.

“While this decision was difficult, I remain confident that the Conservative team in Ottawa will continue to effectively hold Justin Trudeau and his tired, corrupt, hypocritical and divisive government to account, as we prepare to win the next federal election.”

Calkins notes an interim leader will be elected Wednesday night, and in the coming weeks, appropriate plans will be made to hold a full-fledged leadership race.

“I look forward to a robust debate on the important policies that Canadians are counting on Conservatives to deliver and hearing the candidates’ suggestions on the path forward for our party,” he adds.

Red Deer-Mountain View’s Earl Dreeshen says he heard from constituents about how important it is for the party to be united, and one which stands up for their rights and concerns against a, “divisive and corrupt liberal government.”

“As one door closes, another opens, and we must now work to rebuild the trust among each other while remaining rooted in our values and committed to listening to all Canadians. We must continue to be relentless in our quest to unite ourselves and heal both our party and our country,” says Dreeshen, first elected in 2008.

“I want to thank Erin for his service. Being the leader, especially in times like these, is a sacrifice of an incredibly personal nature and I extend my gratitude to Erin and his family for all they have done on our behalf.”

Dreeshen says this is, “the path forward to a common goal of returning to normalcy while remaining steadfast as proud Canadians.”

“Our core conservative values of hard work, respect, and fairness are what make our party and this country great. It is paramount that we champion these unique traits that make us exceptional,” he adds. “I look forward to working with the new leader and continuing to fight on behalf of my constituents of Red Deer- Mountain View.”

The vote against O’Toole was conducted using secret-ballots on Wednesday morning. Cakins, nor Dreeshen revealed how they voted.
