Rebels declaw Tigers in Medicine Hat

The Red Deer Rebels redeemed themselves Sunday night with a 5-2 win over the Tigers in Medicine Hat following a 4-1 loss to the Wheat Kings in Red Deer on Friday.

The first period saw the Rebels come hard out of the gate with Hunter Mayo scoring his first goal this season on goalie Garin Bjorklund. The goal came at 5:19 and was assisted by Kalan Lind.

Exactly three minutes later, Red Deer’s Liam Keeler scored his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Talon Brigley, putting the Rebels up 2-0.

The Tigers then took two tripping penalties in a span of nine seconds, the first by Dru Krebs, the second by Pavel Bocharov. The Rebels made them pay with a power play goal by Christoffer Sedoff with his third goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Ben King and Jace Weir at the 10:32 mark.

Half way through the period, Medicine Hat pulled goaltender Garin Bjorklund and replaced him with Beckett Langkow.

By the end of the period, the Rebels led 3-0 and led on the shot clock as well, 11-7.

The Tigers started a comeback of sorts in the second period with Teague Patton scoring his sixth goal of the season on netminder Connor Ungar. The goal came at the 5:34 mark and was assisted by Daniel Baker and Andrew Basha.

Less than a minute later, Medicine Hat’s Brendan Lee scored his seventh goal this season, assisted by Pavel Bocharov and Oasiz Wiesblatt.

The Rebels led 3-2 after two and outshot the Tigers 17-6 in the second period.

The Rebels solidified their win in the final period, however, when Arshdeep Bains scored his 17th goal of the season at 4:04 and was assisted by Ben King and Jhett Larson to make it 4-2.

The last nail in the coffin came from Red Deer’s Ben King when he scored his 24th goal of the season at 13:18, with the help of Christoffer Sedoff.

The Rebels outshot the Tigers 13-8 in the third period for a three-period total of 41-21.

In power plays, Red Deer went 1/5 while the Tigers went 0/3 with the man advantage.

The third star of the game went to Red Deer’s Christoffer Sedoff while the second star went to the Tigers’ back-up goalie Beckett Langkow. The first star went to the Rebels’ Ben King for scoring the final point and two assists in the game.

The Rebels return to home ice on Monday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. against the Prince Albert Raiders.
