Families needed for new Habitat for Humanity builds in Blackfalds

Jan 12, 2022 | 9:00 AM

Habitat for Humanity Red Deer is looking for families interested in affordable homeownership.

The organization is holding multiple information sessions later this month. A selection process will then occur to decide which families will become owners of four duplex housing units set to break ground in Blackfalds’ Aspen Lakes area this spring.

The sessions are scheduled for the following times at the Abbey Centre in Blackfalds:

Jan. 25: 6-7 p.m. (in-person)
Jan. 26: 6-7 p.m. (via Zoom)

“The opportunity for homeownership with Habitat gives me confidence knowing I can provide my children a forever home and start a completely new chapter. All families need a safe and decent home to feel secure, and to not always have to wonder, ‘What’s next?,’” a current Habitat homeowner says.

“Our information sessions are the first step in applying for a Habitat home”, adds Janelle Duffin, Habitat Red Deer’s Family Services Manager. “We encourage anyone interested in affordable homeownership to join us for the information session, all are welcome.”

To become a Habitat homeowner, the organization requires the family to provide 500 hours of sweat equity in the form of building the home.

The selection process will begin Feb. 1, with the four new units slated to be move-in ready by early 2023.

Individuals wishing to attend either information session are asked to register by emailing info@habitatreddeer.ca. The Abbey Centre in Blackfalds is a REP (restrictions exemption program) facility, so proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test is required to attend the in-person session.
