Rebels lose in overtime to Warriors

In their final game of the year on the final day of the year, the Red Deer Rebels were defeated 4-3 in overtime to the Moose Jaw Warriors at Mosaic Place Friday night.

The first period began strong for the Warriors as Brayden Yager scored his 16th goal of the season on goaltender Chase Wutzke. Coming at the 5:38 mark, the goal was assisted by Riley Niven and Lucas Brenton.

After 20 minutes of play, the Warriors slightly outshot the Rebels 9-8.

The second period began with Moose Jaw’s Eric Alarie scoring just under two minutes in. It was his ninth goal of the season and assisted by Ryder Korczak and Majid Kaddoura, making it 2-0.

But exactly half way through the period, the Rebels’ Jace Isley scored his sixth goal of the season, on netminder Jackson Unger. Assisted by Dallon Melin, the Rebels closed the Warriors lead to 2-1.

A big window of opportunity was created for Red Deer when two of Moose Jaw’s players were sent to the box. Beginning with Nathan Pillion who was called for hooking and about a minute and a half later, Majid Kaddoura for high sticking and the Warriors now two men down. The Rebel’s Christoffer Sedoff took advantage, scoring his second goal this season at 15:20, with help from Blake Stevenson and Jayden Grubbe.

The score now tied 2-2, shots on goal favoured Red Deer 11-9 in the second period.

The third period put the Warriors back in the lead 3-2, however, when Robert Baco scored his fourth of the season at 5:52 with Eric Alarie assisting on the goal.

Soon after, the Rebels’ Blake Stevenson brought the team back to a 3-3 tie at 8:39. It was his 12th goal this season and assisted by Kalan Lind and Kyle Masters.

The Warriors outshot the Rebels 11-3 in the third.

Then with just one shot on goal for both teams in extra time, Moose Jaw won the game just over a minute into overtime when Jagger Finkus scored his 19th goal of the season, assisted by Denton Mateychuk and Brayden Yager.

Total shots on goal were in favor of the Warriors 30-22.

The Rebels, meantime, went 1/4 with the man advantage while Moose Jaw went 0/4 on the power play.

The third star of the game went to Moose Jaw’s Robert Baco. The second star to Red Deer’s Christoffer Sedoff, while Moose Jaw’s Eric Alarie was named the game’s first star.

The win puts the Warriors’ record to 16-14-2-1 and third place in the WHL’s East Division. The overtime loss drops the Rebels record to 22-9-2-1 and still second place in the Central Division.

Red Deer’s first game of the new year is Friday, Jan. 7 against the Edmonton Oil Kings at 7 p.m.
