Warriors shut out Rebels

While the Toque and Teddy Bear Toss brought thousands of donations to the Red Deer Christmas Bureau Friday evening, it did not bring any goals for the Red Deer Rebels, as they lost 4-0 to the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

It was mid-way through the first period before Moose Jaw opened the scoring. Jagger Firkus scored his 10th goal of the season at the 13:30 mark on Rebels goaltender Chase Coward. The goal was assisted by Brayden Yager and Cade Hayes.

Although the Rebels had no points, they did have more shots on goal after 20 minutes, outshooting Moose Jaw 12-8.

The second period went quite similarly as the first, with once again, Jagger Firkus scoring his now 11th goal this season at 10:22. The goal was assisted for the second time by Brayden Yager and this time, Matthew Gallant. The point was made on a power play, with Rebels’ Blake Gustafson in the box for elbowing.

While the Rebels again had shots on goal in their favor, 10-8 after two periods, the score was in favor of the Warriors, 2-0 at that point.

The final period was a clean sweep for Moose Jaw as Daemon Hunt scored his eighth goal of the season in under five minutes. He was assisted by Cade Hayes, and gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead. In hopes of scoring just once, the Rebels pulled goalie Chase Coward out of the net with four and a half minutes left in the game. But Daemon Hunt wasn’t finished yet, scoring again at the 17:58 mark, the empty-netter assisted by Denton Mateychuk.

With a final score of 4-0 in favor of the Warriors, Moose Jaw had slightly more shots on goal for the period, 9-8, but the Rebels outshot the Warriors overall, 30-25.

Red Deer also went 0/3 with the man advantage while Moose Jaw went 1/6.

Naturally, the three stars for the game went to the Warriors with the first star going to Jagger Firkus scoring the first two goals. The second star went to Daemon Hunt scoring the last two goals of the game. The first star went to goalie Jackson Unger.

Rebels coach Steve Konowalchuk felt the team’s loss was due to a lack of consistency.

“I thought it was just too inconsistent right from the start and all the way through. That’s what it boils down to, from structure to compete level. It was too inconsistent from player to player,” he said. “It’s not the identity we want to play to; we got to get back at it.”

The loss brings Red Deer’s record down to 15-9-1 while the Warriors increase their standing to 11-11-1.

The Rebels will play against the Calgary Hitmen on home ice again at the Peavey Mart Centrium this Sunday, Dec. 5 at 4 p.m.
