The Lending Cupboard brimming with excess medical equipment

Nov 6, 2021 | 10:24 AM

Red Deer non-profit The Lending Cupboard has an unusual problem, and needs the community’s help to solve it.

A long-time agency based in the city, but serving all central Alberta, The Lending Cupboard actually has too much medical equipment — a symptom of tremendous community support, officials say.

Typically loaned out for a small fee, the organization is looking for citizens to come forward and purchase some of it.

“First of all, we always want the community to know that loans of equipment will always continue – people will always be able to borrow equipment when they need it,” explained Dawna Morey, executive director. “Our primary goal is to remove barriers to receiving that equipment.”

Equipment has piled up due to generous donations which happen when people don’t need their item any longer, including, sadly, when loved ones pass on.

“We also understand that there are people who need equipment over the longer term. They may need it for more than six months, or for more than a year,” Morey adds. “So we would like to make that equipment available to them on a permanent basis by offering them the ability to purchase it at a reduced cost.”

Examples include:

-bath stools ($29.50 including GST)

-bath transfer benches ($84 including GST)

-various walkers/rollators ($36.75 including GST)
