Nov 5, 2021 | 10:57 PM

The Red Deer Rebels did not rest this Friday evening in pursuit of their 5-3 win against the Wheat Kings at Westoba Place.

The first period started slow until the buzzer rang at 14:54 with a goal from the Wheat Kings’ Rylen Roersma on Rebels’ netminder Connor Ungar with his fifth goal of the season. Assisted by Brett Hyland and Nolan Ritchie, the point was scored on a power play after the Rebels’ Arshdeep Bains was sent to the penalty box for charging.

Although the Rebels had more shots on goal (15-7), it wasn’t enough to even the game by the 20-minute mark.

The second period did not begin any easier for Red Deer with Arshdeep Bains almost immediately given a penalty for goalie interference at the 1:41 mark, leading to the Wheat Kings changing their goalie to Carson Bjarnason. However, at 6:55, the Rebels tied the game with Jhett Larson scoring his fourth goal of the season on Wheat Kings goalie Ethan Kruger, assisted by Ben King.

Red Deer’s Arsheep Bains then put the visitors up 2-1 at 13:26, thanks to assists by Jhett Larson and Hunter Mayo. At 17:39, the Wheat Kings were shorthanded after Nolan Ritchie received a double minor penalty of four minutes for attempting to injure by slew-footing.

The penalty carried over into third period, and after just a minuscule 18 seconds, the Rebels’ Kai Uchacz scored his third goal of the season, with the help of Christoffer Sedoff, bringing the score to 3-1. And the streak began. At the 8:03 mark, Carter Anderson brought the game to 4-1 with his second goal of the season, with an assist by previous scorer Kai Uchacz.

The Wheat King’s Marcus Kallionkieli stepped up for the home team, however, scoring his first goal of the season at 13:55 with Nolan Ritchie and Jacob Hoffrogge assisting, closing the gap to 4-2 Red Deer.

Halfway there, the Wheat Kings made the bold move to take goalie Carson Bjarnason out of the game. The Wheat Kings’ Rylen Roersma then scored for the second time in the game and his sixth of the season, with helpers from Marcus Kallionkieli and Chad Nychuk at the 17:58 mark. Brandon’s goalie then came back in with the score now 4-3 Red Deer.

The Wheat Kings then put an extra skater on the ice a second time at 18:11, but to their demise as Red Deer’s Jayden Grubbe assured their win exactly one minute later with his fifth goal of the season, an empty netter assisted by Liam Keeler.

The Rebels outshot Brandon 14-5 in the third period and 45-17 after 60 minutes.

The heated match ended with Red Deer going 1/4 on the power play and Brandon going 1/5 with the man advantage.

The game’s third star went to Wheat Kings’ Rylen Roersma, while the second star went to the Rebels’ Kai Uchacz. The first star was awarded to the Rebels Jhett Larson.

The win improved the Rebels’ record to 9-5-1 on the season, while the Wheat Kings fell to 5-8-0.

The Rebels now return to Winnipeg’s Wayne Fleming Arena on Sunday, Nov. 7 to face the Winnipeg ICE at 2 p.m. CDT (1 p.m. MT).
