Blackfalds sets immediate, short and long-terms goals for environmental stewardship

Oct 31, 2021 | 9:00 AM

The Town of Blackfalds has a new Environmental Stewardship Strategy (ESS).

Council approved the ESS on Oct. 12, prior to the municipal election. Doing so was identified as a top priority last year in the Town’s Municipal Sustainability Plan.

“We are excited to have an approved Environmental Stewardship Strategy for Town of Blackfalds,” shared Infrastructure Services Manager Laura Thevenaz.

“The Town strives to be a model environmental community, adopting and implementing innovative strategies to protect and enhance the natural environment. We look forward to creating new environmental initiatives and opportunities to engage with our community!”

Key focus areas of the ESS include water, stormwater, land, energy, buildings & infrastructure, air, and solid waste.

Some targets in the plan are immediate (1-2 years), such as increasing the number of participants in the spring and fall clean-up programs, and developing a ‘green’ purchasing policy.

Short-term goals (3-5 years) include developing a Clean Air Action Plan, as well as a Climate Change Adaptation and Resiliency Action Plan.

Goals for the long-term (6+ years) include researching the development of a municipal noxious/nuisance weeds list, and developing an Integrated Pest Management Plan.
