Found Guilty On Two Counts

Verdict for man convicted in fatal fight on Sunchild First Nation

A jury has rendered its verdict in the trial for a man charged in a fatal altercation on the Sunchild First Nation three years ago.

A jury found Evan Foureyes guilty of second-degree murder, guilty of kidnapping with a firearm, but not guilty of assault with a weapon in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench at an off-site location late Monday night.

The verdict was reached on the 10^th day of what was scheduled to be a 14-day jury trial.

Foureyes was convicted on counts relating to a series of incidents on Nov. 9, 2018 that claimed the life of 23-year-old Arley Creed Lagrelle.

The incident began just before 9 pm that day when Rocky Mountain House RCMP responded to a report of an altercation at a gas station on the Sunchild First Nation. One man was seriously injured and taken to hospital where he later died, while two other people suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Mounties say the suspects involved fled the gas station in a vehicle. However, neighbouring detachments were made aware of the incident and the suspect vehicle later located in the Drayton Valley area where officers attempted a traffic stop.

After a spike belt was deployed, police say the vehicle was disabled and came to a stop before the suspects fled on foot. Three individuals were later arrested by Drayton Valley RCMP but were not deemed connected to the homicide. They were, however, deemed connected to the suspect vehicle.

Mounties allege another occupant of the suspect vehicle carjacked a truck driver at gunpoint and was taken to the O’Chiese First Nation where he went to a residence. The truck driver was not injured.

Two suspects were identified in relation to the homicide, one of whom was felt to be responsible for the carjacking. One suspect was arrested at the residence on the O’Chiese First Nation following a standoff involving the RCMP Emergency Response Team. The second suspect, meanwhile, was arrested by Rocky Mountain House RCMP during a traffic stop.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit laid charges in the death of Arley Lagrelle, as well as in the assaults on other victims and the carjacking of the truck driver. Charges against one of the accused were later withdrawn.
