COVID numbers continue decline, Red Deer steady over weekend

PROVINCIAL NUMBERS

New COVID-19 case numbers are once again lower over the weekend.

Over the past three days, Alberta Health confirmed a combined 1,592 new cases, with 709 on Friday, 515 on Saturday, and 368 on Sunday.

There are now 9,481 active cases, down 556 from Friday. That’s also down 2,265 from last Monday’s total of 12,302.

An average of 8,634 tests were conducted each day over the past three days. The seven-day positivity rate is currently 6.41 per cent.

Provincially, 821 patients are currently hospitalized with COVID, down 68 over the weekend, including 182 who have been admitted to intensive care, down nine.

Of the 639 people hospitalized but not in ICU, 399 are completely unvaccinated, 49 have received one dose, and 191 have two doses.

Of the 182 in ICU, 146 are completely unvaccinated, 11 have one dose, and 25 have two doses.

Since Friday’s update, there has sadly been 25 new deaths added to the provincial COVID-19 death toll, which stands at 3,051. That’s up 75 from a week ago.

Deaths reported over the weekend include a female in her 30s from Central Zone, a female in her 20s from Central Zone, and a male in his 30s from Edmonton Zone.

CENTRAL ZONE

Over the weekend, Red Deer added 94 cases, 86 recoveries and two fatalities.

That leaves Red Deer with 388 active cases, up (net) six from Friday.

On Sept. 27, Red Deer hit a new record of 915, breaking its previous record of 911 set May 8, 2021 at the height of the third wave.

Red Deer has now recorded 8,954 total cases, 8,491 recoveries and 75 deaths.

Red Deer’s active case rate is currently 364.7 per 100,000 people, compared to 116.8 for City of Calgary and 122.3 for City of Edmonton.

The entire Central Zone has 1,875 active cases as of Monday, down 65 from Friday. There are 160 hospitalizations, down eight, and 19 people are receiving intensive care at Red Deer Regional Hospital, down one from Friday.

The zone has had 353 deaths linked to the virus, with seven reported over the weekend.

Central Zone’s one-day high for positivity rate over the weekend was 14.27 per cent with 1,379 tests conducted on Oct. 22.

VACCINATIONS

In Alberta, 6,465,123 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have now been administered as of the end of Oct. 24. That’s up 40,935 over the weekend.

Of the 12+ population, 86.6 per cent has received at least one dose (73.7% total population), while 78.9 per cent of the 12+ population is now fully vaccinated (67.1% total population).

In Red Deer, 72,200 (78.8% eligible/67.9% total) people have received at least one dose, up 218 over the last three days.

Meanwhile, 65,779 residents (71.8%/61.8%) are fully vaccinated, up 629. (*Government of Alberta uses a population of 106,395 for Red Deer; of those 91,672 are eligible)
