Rebels with decisive 5-1 victory over Broncos

Oct 5, 2021 | 10:23 PM

The Red Deer Rebels had an impressive showing in Swift Current Tuesday night, beating the Broncos 5-1 for their first road win of the regular season.

Fresh off a 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings at their home game season opener, the Rebels were able to get on the board quickly thanks to a goal from Ethan Rowland. He was able to snap a quick wrist shot passed Broncos’ goalie Reid Dyck only 2:55 into the game.

That was quickly followed up by a goal from Rebels winger Blake Stevenson about two minutes later. These were the first goals of the year for both Rowland and Stevenson. The Rebels also doubled the Broncos in shots on goal in the first period, 16-8.

The second period started much the same as the first, with the Rebels not letting up. Their hard play eventually led to Bronco Owen Pickering getting a delay of game penalty, which the Rebels were able to capitalize on.

Jayden Grubbe scored his first goal of the season on the power play, with assists from Kalan Lind and Blake Stevenson, who gets his second point on the night, putting Red Deer up 3-0.

Some excitement half way through the period though as Rebel Arshdeep Bains was taken down and awarded a penalty shot, which he put passed goaltender Dyck to bring the Rebels up 4-0.

After that things got a bit more scrappy. A high hit on Rebel player Liam Keeler behind his own goal drew a crowd. Once the dust settled, a number of players were in the box and things began to settle down.

The Broncos were having trouble staying out of the box, and the Rebels were happy to take advantage. Bronco Carter Stebbings had just stepped out of the box when teammate Rylan Gould picked up a delayed slashing penalty. While the ref’s arm was still up, Rebels defenseman Jace Weir was able to score the rebels fifth goal of the night.

Once again, the Rebels dominated in shots on goal in the second period, leading 20-5.

The Broncos were able to play shutout spoiler for hometown kid Chase Coward, as a Rebels defensemen lost the puck in front of his own net, and Bronco Josh Filmon was able to take advantage to score the first goal for Swift Current and his second of the season.

The Rebels outshot the Broncos 41-19 for the game, while also scoring on 2/6 power plays, while the Broncos were unable to capitalize on their 3 power play chances.

Rebels goalie Chase Coward saved 18/19 shots in his third start in a row, while Broncos goalie Reid Dyck stopped 36/41 shots.

The Rebels next game is this Friday, Oct. 8, when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers at the Peavey Mart Centrium. Tickets are available at ticketsalberta.com.
