Blackfalds Mayor Richard Poole not seeking re-election

Another central Alberta Mayor has announced they won’t be seeking re-election this fall.

Richard Poole, Mayor of the town of Blackfalds since 2017, announced Wednesday morning in a letter posted in the ‘Mayor’s blog’ section of the Town’s website, that he won’t be seeking re-election.

Poole says “it’s time for me to look for new experience and opportunities.”

Poole has been part of Blackfalds council since 1995, and says this has been the hardest year of them all, with the COVID-19 pandemic taking a heavy toll on all Albertans.

“Despite this, I am proud that your council made decisions that not only assisted the community during a difficult time but will encourage new development and create a sense of optimism in our community in the upcoming years.”

He acknowledges the challenges COVID-19 created, and how it has divided our province and community, something he says will likely continue into the next council’s term.

Poole acknowledges some projects that are done or nearly complete that he is very proud to have had a hand in.

The Eagle Builder’s Centre is expected to open its new ice surface next month with a soft ribbon cutting ceremony planned, along with the Blackfalds Servus Credit Union Public Library official opening.

Poole also mentioned important road construction projects in the community which aim to make the community safer. The Gregg Street extension will create a more efficient east-west corridor through the town, as well as a safer railway crossing. If you live in Blackfalds or have even been delayed by a train there, you know exactly the positive impact this will have on the community.

Poole ended his letter by thanking all members of council he has worked with over the years, as well as municipal staff, and of course, the citizens of Blackfalds.

“A huge thank you to the citizens of Blackfalds for their dedication to making our community the best in Alberta. It has truly been an honour to serve this community.”
