Chinook’s Edge School Division welcomes 42 new teachers

Chinooks Edge School Division is welcoming 42 new teachers this year who are currently participating in the new teacher orientation program.

The annual orientation and mentorship program runs for three days and involves any teacher who is new to the division or new to teaching in general. Considered one of the most extensive programs of its kind in our province, it was designed to increase new teachers’ understanding of what is expected of them from Chinook’s Edge, as well as providing support to the teachers to help them achieve their goals.

It’s also a time where new teachers can meet and bond with each other and division staff.

Lucy Lynett, who will join the staff at École Steffie Woima Elementary School in Sylvan Lake as their new pre-kindergarten teacher, said this type of style is in line with her personal priorities.

“You can easily see that forming strong relationships is foundational in this school division,” she says.

Lynett grew up in Calgary where she studied Early Childhood Education. By the time she and her husband moved to central Alberta, she was a stay-at-home mom with her three kids for the next 10 years.

It was there when she discovered her passion for organizations and specialists who support young children getting ready for school, such as Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists.

“It became magical to me, to be alongside these children as they reached an “aha moment’ and I knew I wanted to work with them in a classroom setting.”

Graduating from University in the spring, Lynett knew teaching pre-k was the right fit for her.

“It’s key for these little people to have solid relationships with the people in their lives and I’m so excited to be helping them work towards success,” she says. “I want them to know they’re loved and that we’re all on a team- its team child all the time! I feel like it’s a dream job in a dream school division.”

Associate Superintendent of Learning Services Jason Drent says their learning services team helps teachers succeed by connecting them to resources and supports that will, in turn, support and provide success for students.

“I see energy with this group that I’m so excited will be taken into our classrooms. Our students are going to be so well-served by our staff, and that matters now more than ever. We will be welcoming our students back to highly-engaging learning environments.”

The first day of school for students in Chinook’s Edge is Wednesday, Sept. 1.
